Kackar mountains,
trekking.
Trekking in Turkey's Black Sea Mountain's, namely the Kackar is fun. There are many peaks between 3000m to 4000m in the area, the highest is the Kackar peak at 3932m. The area has an alpine climate since it has approximately the same latitude. July August and partly September are the recommended periods for visiting the area. The easiest way to approach the mountains from North is flying to Trabzon airport and then using the ground transportation (e.g., rental cars, buses). In order to approach the mountain series from the South, Erzurum airport is the most convenient. There is no hut system like the ones in the Alps, but you may camp almost everywhere since the water sources are abundant especially at the Northern slopes. Moreover, majority of the high meadows and villages in the area have simple bed and breakfast type accomodations.
There are several books (in English) describing the area:
- One is dedicated to the Kackar: Kate Clow with Terry Richardson, The Kackar, Upcountry Ltd, 2008, ISBN 978-095392185-0.
- The other one is Marc Dubin and Enver Lucas, Trekking in Turkey, Lonely Planet, 1989, ISBN 0-86442-037-4.
- There are also books in Turkish such as: Tunc Findik, Kackar Daglari, Homer, 2001, ISBN 975-8293-18-4.
